Better Environmentally Sound Transportation
- Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) was started
in 1990 by a group of environmentally conscious cyclists to address
problems that cyclists face daily on the road. It has evolved
into an integrated voice for all alternative transportation issues.
- BEST's main goal is to implement sustainable alternatives to the
private automobile in order to foster a better quality of life
for all British Columbians.
-
- BEST's accomplishments to date include:
- an annual ride for the environment
- a community ride for cyclists
- community bike skills workshops for bicycle maintenance and safety
- the quarterly newsletter the Spoke'n'word
- Bike to Work Week and Clean Air Commute (an annual challenge for
employees to take alternatives to single occupancy vehicles)
- a website with on-line information about the group's projects,
activities, and upcoming events
- Its two main projects are:
- Our Community Bikes (197 West 17th Avenue; 879-2453), a store
that reconditions used bikes and sells them at moderate prices
(cyclists can rent tools to repair a bike in the store before
buying it as well as repair their own bikes; mechanics are available
to provide assistance)
- Alternative Transportation Centre (ATC), which provides education,
resources, and consulting services to individuals, communities,
and workplaces
