Peace and Carrots Permaculture

Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable human environments. It is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature. It insists on protracted and thoughtful observation, rather than protracted and thoughtless labour. It looks at plants and animals as part of a greater whole, rather than as a single products.

Lonnie Prouse began Peace and Carrots Permaculture in effort to help city dwellers take part in sustainable urban living, by way of composting. Lonnie received her BA with a double major in Environmental Studies and Political Science at the University of Victoria in 1994, and has since narrowed her focus of study to permaculture. She attended the Occidental Arts and Ecology Centre in Northern California where she received a more specialized diploma in Permaculture. Lonnie gained hands on experience in Mexico educating a women's cooperative group on the benefits of compost, and has returned to Vancouver where she continues to share her knowledge of permaculture. Peace and Carrots educates urban dwellers on the advantages of composting, while providing them with materials to get started.

Peace and Carrots realize that not everyone has the space for compost units, so they offer a pick up service for apartment dwellers, and those that only have space for a kitchen unit. The reasonable prices and special services make it easy for everyone to get started.

Supplies and Services offered:

  • kitchen composting unit (fits a cupboard)
  • a booklet on what to compost, what not to compost, and a step by step guide of how to compost
  • introduction to compost (an in-home presentation)
  • weekly pick-up of compost
